This is the plan for my 1966 Crew Cab, some of which is in stone, some of
which is still wide open for debate. One thing that some would say is a plus,
and others would say is a minus, is that I plan everything down to a T before I
execute (I guess that's what 5+ years of college does to a person!!!). I
think it's mostly good, but may times, I have told myself "stop thinking about
it, and just do it!"

General
In general I want a "New-Old" truck, this means I want a 1966 body style
truck with all of the creature comforts of today. It should be near-show
quality, keeping in mind what I want to do with it.
Drivability/Performance requirements:
One goal for this truck is to tow my 8000 lb camper in overdrive at 75 mph
indefentately with 33" tires on it, as well as be able to tow a bobcat...
Body/Exterior
 | Basic body style of 1966, however I have no intent of
trying to make a "numbers matching" or "original" style truck... It needs to
look like a 66 in body lines, but I don't want any of the trim that was
included on most of the orinial styles. |
 | I have been thinking a strait up fire engine red (no
flakes or anyting) for this truck would look very nice. |
 | I intend to place the fuel tank under the bed, and
shave stock filler neck location |
 | The truck as I purchased it, as externally exposed
hinge pins for the back doors which I would like to get rid of by either using
a different style hinge, or possibly suiciding the doors. |
 | Another cool mod to show contemporary standards would
be to swap the door handles with a newer (like 2001) style handle. |
 | I am thinking mirrors off of a 1987 vintage chevy would look
great. |
 | As for the front end, I know I want to get into the lights,
and use something other than stock, but I am not sure what style. Any
comments would be good! |
 | My single biggest concern with the body is rust... I adhore the
idea of putting a new paint job on this thing, then having it rust through in
a couple of years. This is why my intent would be to send the body to
http://www.precisionresto.com to
have it cooked, repaired, and sealed as necessary. |
Driveline
 | As I mentioned above, I want this truck to do 75 in OD
on a long haul, towing a camper or bobcat. The only way I see to do this
appropriately would be to use a 454 followed by a 4L80E or Allison 1000 5
speed w/overdrive tranny coupled to a NP 205 case. |
 | I am still well up in the air on what chassis to use,
however since I am going to use this as a daily driver, I am thinking to stay
away from 1 ton running gear as I fear the ride would not be as comefortable
as with 1/2 or 3/4 ton gear. My latest thought is to try to find a 1993
or newer Chevy 4wd with a 454, the 4L80E tranny, and 3/4 ton rear axle, and
front IFS. With this chassis, I could add a set of air bags to use when
towing, as I only tow about 25 times per year. The only problem with
this is matching up the wheel bases with the one off wheel base associated
with the '66 and a long bed. I would have to lengthen the chassis a few
inches, but this doesn't seem like a huge problem. |
Tires
 | At this point I am kind of single minded... BF Goodrich Mud
Terrain's in 33x12.50x15 or possibly 255/85/16 |
Wheels
 | Chrome American Racing wheels (I am not sure of the model
name) |
Interior
This is where it gets sick... I WANT IT ALL! Other than leather
seats... Leather sucks. The entire interior should be as neat and shaved as a
new truck.
 | Black interior with red accents |
 | Custom Gage Cluster |
 | New Steering Column (1984 or
newer) |
 | Pioneer Stereo system with 12
disc changer, 30 gb wireless MP3 player, 1500 peak watts... |
 | GPS system |
 | DVD system |
 | Nintendo plug in's for the kids |
 | Heated velour bucket front
seats with power everything |
 | Velour rear bench seat |
 | 1700 watt power inverter |
 | Remote Start |
 | Keyless entry |
 | Power windows |
 | Power Locks |
 | Power Brakes |
 | Power Steering |
 | Minimum of 3-12 volt outlets as
I like gadgets |
 | Tinted windows |
 | Space for all my crap, I like
to have a full set of tools/jumper cables/tow strap with but most of the time,
I don't have room for it. |
 | Electric Brake Control built
into the dash |
 | Air Compressor-I have a small
12V Campbeel Hausfield I plan to tear appart and fit into the design of the
truck |
 | Cell Phone hands free setup |
 | Cruise Control |
 | Variable speed windshield
wipers |
|
