If it moves, I shoot it or at least I would if I wanted to and had a license to do it!!! I guess this means that PETA can kiss my a$$. PETA meaning People Eating Tasty Animals fits the bill better than the tree huggin, fin and feather other brand. I don't know how many Whitetail fanatis there are out there, but I suspect that there are others out there whose year revolves around deer season. I typically have my vacation lined up for deer season two season's in advance... All should know to plan on not seeing the fat man around that week. I pick up my gun, clothes and beer, hop in the truck and tour northern wisconsin for as long as I please (I'm an American, it's my right!) I tell my dear wife (not to sound cheauvanistic) not to expect to see me, and that I might call from time to time during season to pass on an update or two... After 7 years of marriage though, she pretty well has me figured out and knows that I'll probably be home once or twice during season to say hi. This past season was probably one of the funner season's I've had, even though it wasn't too successfull as I bagged only one spike buck, a doe, and fawn (all of which or rather parts of which are in the freezer, hand processed by the fat man... Ted Nugent would be proud). Grab a box of tissues and cry along cuz here comes the mushy part...Deer Season for me somewhat represents my last vestage of freedom.... for the other 357 days of the year, I am a loyal, hard working (most of the time), nice, responsible Dad that comes home every night, doesn't spend too much time in the bars (once a month or so) and doesn't have too many vices (I guess my wife might argue differently). For those 9 days, I feel 16 again, it's just me, my gun, food, beer, and an open tag or two. I go to camp and help out setting up, sit down for a few beers, wake up and try to shoot something, then do it all over again for as many days as I can stand it. I cover ground from Douglas County, to Polk County to Bayfield County and possibly a few others in there as well. No curfues, no thoughts of good behavior in front of the children, no pollitically correct office talk, just one fat man having a good time. I hunt with a Browning BAR Mark II Safari .270 with Elephant sights and a 3x9 adjustable scope.... An uncle turned me on to the Browning brand as he shot a lot of bucks with his 7mm auto... It does the trick for most of the shots I ever get a chance at. I like the fact that it's an automatic and has the boss, as a decent portion of my hunting used to be pushing chunks as a driver and the automatic feature was nice for that, the boss is nice because I can barely feel the recoil! I'm not a gun nut but I do have a small assortment for the different game out there. I always roll my eyes when I hear people get in arguments over which gun is better, reloading or no reloading, heavier vs lighter ammo, control, windage, yada yada yada. Get a decent gun, spend a bunch of time at the range, and keep it in good shape..... If you accomplish this much, you have what it takes to lay down some Whitetails. |
