Here's some discussion and pics on how I've been preparing the frame I've recently been working on the frame of the 67, trying to get it to the point where I can set the engine and tranny. All of the pics here were taken on 5/14/06
5/15/06 After some discussion on Chevytalk I decided that I would drill out a number of the rivets in the frame and replace them with bolts. I guess two reasons, 1. There is severe corrosion under some of the crossmember brackets that I think I need to look at. 2. I would like to be able to coat those surfaces to deter rust creeping out from them. 3. There are a number of broken rivets that need to be replaced anyway.... So tonight I started pulling it apart, I got the front spring perches, the engine crossmember another crossmember, and a couple of other pieces removed. I managed to sandblast up and POR 15 the front shackles and engine crossmember tonight... things are starting to look good!!!!! 5/16/06 Well, I got up this morning, got dressed and went in to work... for the first time in about two weeks, we had a nice morning, it was over 60 degrees!!!! Sooooo, I decided to call it quits (gotta stop doin that, not a lot of vacation left!) at about 8:30, with the full intention of coming home, gettin some grubs on and working on the 67' all day... My plans changed when I suggested to my wife that she plant some shrubs in front of the house. Before I knew it I had spent $200 on plants, rocks, fabric... ugh! So, long and short of it I didn't get a lot of time to work on the truck today, but I did manage to blow out a number of rivets... One more good hard evening should take care of all of them. Then comes the POR 15 and reassembly WOOHOOO. 5/17/06 Today, I went to work... got home and did some more landscaping, nearly have the front of the house finished, I have about 7 more shrubs to plant (planted 4 today) and a yard of mulch to spread. Then, a little topsoil, some seed, and DONE... So, on to the good stuff, I managed to get out all of the rivets that are coming out (all of them, 100%!). So, I now have a pair of bare frame rails setting on a pair of sawhorses, so I guess it's all uphill from here. I plan on powerwashing as much as possible tomorrow, So I can hit a bunch of it with POR 15, and do whatever repairs are necessary... There are a couple of areas of the frame that have greatly thinned wall thickiness, I would guess 50-100% through wall (there is one spot I can stick my finger through). I will repair these spots with butt weld patches possibly tommorrow. THEN THEIR READY TO BLAST AND POR 15!!!. Anyway, that's the news in Suptown.
5/18/06 Well no truck progress done today... Got home from work and took my boat down to check it out to see if the new distributor that we put in it would clear up the problem... No luck... it just doesn't have any power and no top end. Pulled the boat out, and there was water in the oil. Remembering back, my buddy (who is a 50% partner on the boat) took it out, it had overheated.........You figure it out... warped head. Soooooo, I brought it home and started pulling the head on it. 5/19/06 After work, Finished pulling the head on the boat tonight and sure enough there was water between the head gasket and the head... We will have the head milled and put it back on with new gaskets. New water pump too.... The good news is that after that fiasco, I managed to puddle weld up the corrosion areas in the 67' frame had three areas all together that are/were corroded bad enough to require repair. Hopefully tomorrow I can clean them up and paint them weather will dictate.
5/20 Saturday... Went to couple soccer games, ate brunch got home bout noon. Somewhere in there I decided to make gumbo for a get together this evening... I think it turned out ok. Was the first time I've ever made gumbo before. On to the truck-I managed to get all of the parts washed up and ready for blasting, there's got to be about 10 bolted on pieces on each side... quite a bit. The frame rails are ready for blasting also. POR 15 says to use metal ready on the subtrate before applying the POR 15, however I'm thinking this step isn't necessecary for a surface that is brought to a white metal condition... hope I'm right. We'll see tomorrow. 5/21/06 Sunday-So far it's been a good day, I blasted nearly all of the parts for one of the frame rails this morning. Ready for coating. I'm just sittin down taking a break, when I get up, I'll get one or both of the frame rails done.
YO ADRIAN I DID IT!!!!! Ok so it's not that big of a deal... but I did manage to get both frame rails blasted and coated today along with a bunch of the hardware! I started at about 9:00 this morning, and just finished at nearly 11:00, what a stretch. The sandblaster worked as expected, probably a bit better than expected I guess. The biggest problem is re-using media. And it's not so much the meadia, but the fact that it is somewhat dificult to strain out all the little pieces of crap that can clog up the nozzle. My suggestion to you, if you are planning on blasting with recycled media is to make a high performance straining system, it will save you a lot of pain and anguish, even in the short run. I will post some pics tommorrow. 5/22/06 I won't be doing any "work" tonight. Only cleaning and organizing. Here are the pics of how things turned out.
5/23/06 Didn't expect to get any work done today, had other plans... Even though I had other plans, I did manage to get a couple of the parts preped for coating. The rest of the week is going to be bad... I might be able to work a small bit tomorrow night.. but Thursday night I think we will be going camping, staying through Monday... so likely no work until Tuesday. 5/24/06 Not much work done tonight... I set up all the parts I have left to coat, so next good window, I will blast them and paint them. But prolly won't be until Tuesday of next week. I did, however manage to take a look at the rear end. It looks like one wheel cylinder is froze, and the other side has a bat axle seal. Soooo, I started tearing it apart, in prep of replacing this stuff. While I have it apart, I think I will blast it and replace the pinion seal also. GM 12 bolt. 5/25/06 Well, for the first time in a while, I got absolutely nothing done today... went to work, got home, went to soccer game, ate, went to soccer game, got camper setup for camping... End of day. Won't have anything to say till prolly monday or tuesday. Happy Memorial Day! Totogatic here I come! 5/29/06 Back from camping today, man was it hot yesterday... 96 degrees! Went camping Friday night, Sat, Sun, till this evening. Got home and had a chance to blast and POR 15 all of the rest of the little parts that needed to be done. As soon as these dry, I'll be re-assembling the frame. After that, I'll put the front end back in, then work on the rear end. Prolly take all week to get to the point that front end is back in. 5/30/06 Not much done tonight... spent most of the night working on the boat, but I did manage to get a couple of the parts put back on the frame. 5/31/06 Well I did a small small amount of work before work this morning so that was nice. Came home from work and worked on the boat again (that is getting old). After that I started bolting things back on again, I now have probably 10% of the bolts put back in the frame and such. l will hopefully get the boat running tomorrow, and get to work on the truck this weekend!!! I think my goal will be to get the entire chassis back together by the end of the weekend minus the rear end. Still need to blast and coat it. 6/1/06 Got home from work tonight and tested the boat.... IT WORKED!!!!! with a little timing adjustment, it worked all right, but that's a different story. After I got home, I drilled out some holes a bit larger, and hit them with POR 15 and bolted a few things together. 6/2/06 Tonight I got about 4 more things bolted back together, but I still have to tighten them down. I think I probably only have another 6 things to attach and I will call it "done" I put on the rear spring pirches, and two body mounts. I should be able to work on it tomorrow after soccer. By mid afternoon I should have the front axle back under it. I had to stop early tonight at about 6:30 to go to a buddies place for a bonfire and beer..... mmmmmmmmm.... bbbbbeeeeeeeeeeeerrrrr..... 6/3/06 Got a decent amount done today... Got most of the frame back together and got the fron axle slid under the frame! 6/4/06 Well, worked on the truck most of the day, stopping to work on the boat a bit, and have dinner with the my parents. In the last two days, I've put the frame back together, have most of it tightened up, this was yesterday. Today, I blasted the rear axle and some other parts (oh, I also changed out the three outer seals on the axle yesterday also). After blasting, I had one very bad weld on the axle, there looked to be a LARGE amount of porisity in the weld between the flange that mounts to the brake backing plate and the axle tube. I'm not sure if it was porisity or some odd type of preferential corrosion . Either way, I took a little time to lay down a couple more passes over this weld. While I was at it, I did the other side and a couple spots on the differential also. Hope these don't crack as I didn't use any preaheat. Oh well, I'll find out sooner or later! Here are a number of pictures uploaded today.
6/5/06 I got most of the rear brakes put back on tonight... The biggest problem is that I need to get some more lock washers to put them back on... Once that is done < can put the wheels on, and put the axle back under the frame! I am hoping to have the back axle back under the frame by the end of the week. Once the back axle is done, I'm thinkin I will concentrate on getting the gas tank cleaned up and re-fitted. Once this is done, it's drivetrain time! 6/6/06 Another good night, I finished putting the rear brakes on the backing plates, put some tires on, and moved the axle out. Then I quite.... had to see over the hedge... was a decent movie... kids loved it. Anyway after I got home, I slid the axle underneath and bolted the springs in place. Then I positioned the axle, and installed the 4" lift blocks with u-bolts. Got it tightened down and off of the sawhorses!!!!! All in all it was another good night!. Not sure what I'll work on next, but I think it will be cleaning my gruj (that''s garage for some of you) doing all these projects at once, I just start pulling tools out and never put them back till I'm at a good point. I'm there. Anyway, goodnight. 6/12/06 Been a while since I've written. Since last log, I've cleaned the gruj, moved the frame into the other gruj, torn a cracked manifold off of the boat, and tore apart my pa's '95 F150. Lots of brake problems. Anyway, it'll be a while till I write again as I'm driving out to Reno for a week...
9/22/07 Wow its been a long time since I posted. Here are a couple new pics.
